How we built an AI-powered narrative engine inside Power BI - for a fraction of what you would expect.
A commercial real estate advisory firm operating across a major US market had a comprehensive Power BI reporting system. The data was clean, the models were sound, the dashboards were well-built. On paper, everything worked.
In practice, the people who needed the insights most - brokers, executives, analysts - did not always have time to sit with a dashboard and interpret what the numbers meant in context. They needed summaries. Written, human-readable summaries that explained what was happening in the market, what had changed, and what deserved attention.
The obvious solution was Microsoft's built-in Smart Narrative feature. Unlocking it required a Fabric capacity licence costing hundreds to thousands per month, a significant line item for a single feature that offered limited control over tone, structure, and depth.
The question was not what is the standard solution - it was what is the right solution for this specific context.
Rather than recommending the premium licence, we looked at what the client actually needed and concluded that we could deliver something superior for a fraction of the cost.
The Power BI report already contained the data - sales volumes, pricing trends, market activity, deal flow, year-on-year comparisons. All the numbers were there, modelled and calculated. What was missing was the translation layer - something that could take those numbers and turn them into professional, contextual narrative.
We engineered a custom integration that extracts the relevant KPIs and metrics from the data model, structures them with carefully crafted instructions, and passes them to an AI engine via a secure connection. The AI processes the data and returns polished, professional narrative, rendered directly in the Power BI report. The entire interaction is seamless and takes seconds.
The entire solution sits within the existing Power BI environment. No additional Microsoft licensing, no external tools, no browser tabs, no manual steps. The user sees a report with numbers on one side and a professionally written summary on the other.
When someone changes a filter - selects a different borough, a different quarter, a different property type - the narrative regenerates automatically. New context, new data, new summary. In seconds.
Unlike the built-in feature, the engine can write from multiple perspectives. A detailed analyst breakdown. A three-paragraph executive summary. A broker-facing narrative highlighting opportunities. The tone, length, focus, and structure are all configurable, and can be adjusted at any time without a platform upgrade or licence change.
The firm now has AI-generated narratives that update with every filter change, delivering contextual, professional summaries tailored to the perspective of the person reading them. Brokers get market opportunity briefs. Executives get strategic overviews. Analysts get detailed trend breakdowns. All from the same report.
The solution replaced a premium licence that would have cost upwards of forty to fifty thousand dollars annually with a custom-engineered approach costing under one hundred dollars per month.
